In Defense of the Weak Essay Have you murdered anyone? How about you? We are all afraid of murder for this does not only voraciously end a life; it also leads the murder to a gruesome punishment legally and religiously. All religions uphold the sanctity of life and abhor the unjust ending of it. It is the belief of many that if one does not shun from evil acts, such as killing, he will burn in hell. We all hold these views but why is it that many of us are still pushing for abortion? Why is it that many pregnant women still view abortion as the ultimate solution to their problem? Is killing you child really a solution or a gruesome sin that you will have to live with for the rest of your life? For those who rally in favor of abortion, they contend that a child in the womb of a mother is not yet considered human thus; killing that child is still legal. Another contention of pro-choice people is the argument that the woman should have a choice with what happens with her body. Bearing a child is not an easy situation much more, carrying the child in the womb for nine months. This is a torment for the mother especially if the child is a product of sexual abuse or rape. The same argument goes true for teenagers who get pregnant at such a tender age. It is an ordeal for these women to give birth to a child which they did not plan of having. Pro-abortion advocates argue that giving birth to an unwanted child will not only destroy one life but two lives, that of the mother and the child. It is better to abort a child than to give birth to him and yet no adequate love, care and daily sustenance can be provided to him (Lowen). While these advocates may have a point, this is not sufficient to murder someone. Abortion is not just a normal medical procedure but a form of murder. Through abortion a frail child is put to death even before he is given the chance to see the world and fight for his rights. Similar to murder, there is treachery. The child is being deprived of his life without even knowing it and without having the chance to fight for the life that he has. True enough a woman has a right to make a decision for what happens with his body but this is only applies if she is the only one concerned. This does not apply if her child’s life is at stake. Once a woman becomes pregnant, there are already two lives involved because medically speaking the embryo is genetically distinct from the mother. Life is sacred and a gift given by God. No one has the right to end it, not even the parents of the child (Anderson). It is quite difficult to fathom why mothers would want to kill their own children but fear of murdering a man walking down the street. They see that ending the life of an individual who is capable of defending himself is more inhumane than abortion. I do not intend to foster the murdering of a man on the street in place of abortion. What I intend to emphasize is the fact that through abortion a mother kills her own flesh a blood without even giving that child a chance to defend himself. With regard to unwanted pregnancies, its must be remembered that it is not the choice of the child to be conceived. He was a product of the union of a man and a woman. Whether or not there is love, the child should not suffer the effects of such union. He is innocent of what happened thus, mothers should be as objective as possible in dealing with their children for after all, they are their own flesh and blood. Let us stop pushing for abortion and start caring for the lives of innocent children. They have not done anything wrong to be murdered. I believe it is about time that the crusade in favor of abortion end. Let us not foster the killing of children, instead let us help them fight for their rights and be given the chance to live the life they were given. References Lowen, L. The Unhealthy Diet of College Students People eat food every day without thinking twice about it, because it is a necessity for us to live. How often do you think about what is in the foods that you eat? How many calories does it have? Are there any vitamins and minerals in it? Is it high in fat? For most of us and especially college students who live a busy life on the go, the answer to that question is probably no. Since becoming a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania Academy of Culinary Arts, I have been more interested in food and what people are eating. Also since more young Americans are becoming obese I want to find out what they are eating and where. Going to college and seeing how students have poor eating habits I want to find out why they are eating this way. Is it because they are away from home for the first time? Or is it because that is the only food that is available for them? I also want to find out if students would eat healthier if it was provided for them? My hypothesis is that students eat unhealthy because it is more convenient for them. There is usually no time to cook a homemade meal and most college students are always in a hurry so it is easier to pick up takeout. Also most college students don’t know how to cook. I also believe that most college students don’t care if the food is unhealthy for them, as long as it tastes good. Hopefully, in the following pages I will uncover the wide world of college eating. The research methods that I used for this paper were surveys, interviews and observations. I performed a survey on ten college students in which I asked various yes and no questions and ones with various multiple-choice answers. Do you have a meal ... ...omething to go. I found out that college student’s want foods that are quick, taste good, and cheap. The limitation to my research was that I only passed out ten surveys all at the cafeteria. Perhaps if I did more or passed them out at a different location I might have gotten different results. I also only interviewed two people, and a larger sample might have changed my results. Also only observing my roommates shopping might have limited me to what I always eat, other college students might buy healthier foods when they shop. Take a minute now and think about what you eat in an average day and see if you fall into the categories of eating unhealthy with the majority of college students. Next time you buy something to eat take a second and look what’s in it and think to yourself. Should I be eating this? Or is there something healthier that I could be eating?

Imduction Processes Essay

Induction is the first step along a pathway of learning that a new worker undertakes when joining the social care sector or a new organisation and will continue all through their career. It is one of the principal most important processes within the organisation. Staff induction often focuses on the corporate policies, eg: safety, security, anti-discrimination, equality, etc. This is useful information, if not the most interesting to participants. Beyond policies, we also cover practicalities, for example how to carry out common administrative tasks such as completing weekly timesheets, changing address, how to fill out daily diary records for the service users. What information systems exist, we give out company email addresses and team leader/manager telephone numbers. Induction training is very important for new staff. Good induction training assists with retention of new starters ensuring they are settled in quickly into a productive happy role. This in turn is good for the company staff retention cuts recruitment costs. Induction training offers the opportunity to establish clear expectations from the outset in terms of integrity, ethics and professional social responsibility. The primary importance is to ensure that the individual is working within the guidelines of the law, company’s policies, procedures and values, Safeguarding regulations and Care Quality Commission standards. It is then also extremely important for the service users, it enables staff to know and understand each individual and become familiar with their support plans to ensure that the staff follow a person centred approach to caring for the service users’. The induction process we provide is based around the Skills for Care Common Induction Standards. These Common Induction Standards have been designed to provide a structured start for workers in the first 12 weeks of employment, which will help ensure that they are then safe to leave alone with responsibility for the people they support. When workers are expected to perform any tasks that are not covered by the standards, appropriate training will be sourced before the work is undertaken. There are eight standards that the induction covers, these are: Standard 1 Role of the health and social care worker Standard 2 Personal developments Standard 3 Communicate effectively Standard 4 Equality and Inclusion Standard 5 Principles for implementing duty of care Standard 6 Principles of safeguarding in health and social care Standard 7 Person-centred support Standard 8 Health and safety in an adult social care setting. Each standard contains a number of areas of knowledge that staff need to know about before they can work safely without close supervision. Each area is made up of outcomes which say what exactly you need to know about that area. Once the 12 week induction process is completed the staff will have knowledge of all the standards above and will have reached the desired outcomes of the induction. As a manager it is my responsibility to arrange for the new staff to learn about the different areas within the standards and that they gain enough knowledge to meet the outcomes for each area. People have different ways of learning, some learn by being told things through, others learn through watching, some through talking things and coming up with ideas and also some learn by actually doing the tasks. Prior to induction a training needs analysis is completed this will identify the best way to facilitate the training needs for each new member of staff. I will then liaise with our training department and arrange for the induction to take place. We will agree the best way to deliver the training to meet the individual’s needs. This can be done through classroom room based training sessions, reading and completing training booklets and also through shadowing an experienced member of staff who has the knowledge and skills to pass on. During the 12 week induction period the new member of staff will be assessed on their competency to ensure they have understood everything they have learned. These assessments will be carried out by the manager, team leader and/or training manager. Then when the staff member has successfully completed the induction period, the manager in combination with the team leader will sign off the Certificate of Successful Completion. Once completed staff are  encouraged to develop their job role to include new areas of work not covered by the common induction standards. The induction standards provide the basic training necessary for work in social care however as a company we provide further training for the additional tasks not covered through induction. This has been developed through skills for care learning sessions and the training available includes: Acquired Brain Injury – (Introduction) Asperger’s Syndrome – (Introduction) Autism Syndrome – (Introduction) Dementia and Confusion – How to respond Dementia Defining Learning Disability – (Introduction) Recognising and Managing Conflic Managing Medication Nutrition in Home Support Services Empowerment of Service User The completed induction links in to many of the knowledge requirements for the core units of the diploma in Health and Social Care qualification. Training is encouraged throughout employment to enable the staff member to develop new skills and knowledge and open up further career options. This supports and promotes professional development that will be beneficial to both the organisation and the staff member, ensuring that we are working in line with current best practice and guidelines. Effective induction can assist staff who want to move from one type of social care provision to another, or who are starting work with a different service user group, as they will have new things to learn so that they can understand how their practice may need to be adapted to the changed circumstances. The knowledge and skills training sessions can provide the learning necessary for workers to make a successful transition into a different part of the social care sector. Successful completion of induction ensures staff meet the General Social Care Council (GSCC) code of practice for social care workers, which describes the standards of professional conduct and practice required of social care workers as they go about their daily work. As an employer  AllCare has to adhere to a code of practice which includes their duty to establish a competent workforce. Ensuring staff successfully complete their induction is a part of this. The Common Induction Standards have been designed to help make sure that organisations can provide a quality service for the individuals’ we support, and that includes making sure new staff are safe to leave alone in the workplace to carry out their role and responsibilities. We centre on the mission that, our company will provide a safe environment for both staff and service users. We focus on safeguard and promote the welfare of the service users in our care, in compliance with Trafford multi-agency Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedures and the publication of the ‘No Secrets’ guidance by the Department of Health in 2000. This guidance stipulates that all local partner agencies should work together to prevent, detect and investigate concerns about possible adult abuse. The role of induction training with regard to safeguarding is to help develop and foster a shared understanding of the tasks, processes, principles, and roles and responsibilities outlined in national guidance and local arrangements for safeguarding vulnerable adults and promoting their welfare. Induction teaches how to recognise and act on signs of abuse and neglect, risk assessments and the making and management of referrals, ensuring that our staffs are competent and confident in carrying out their responsibilities for safeguarding and promoting service users’ welfare. All staffs are provided with this information during induction via our employee handbook.

Should You Be Worried About Lead Pipes

Lead was commonly used to make pipes in plumbing for many centuries. It is cheap, rust resistant, and easy to weld. Eventually, health concerns encouraged a switch to alternate plumbing materials.  Copper and specialized plastics (like PVC and PEX) are now choice products for water pipes in homes.  Ã‚   However, many older homes still have the original lead pipes installed. In the United States and Canada, homes built before the 1950s should be suspected of having lead pipes, unless they have been replaced already. Lead soldering, applied to join together copper pipes, continued to be used well into the 1980s.   Lead Is a Serious Health Concern   We absorb lead through the  air, our food, and the water we drink. The effects of lead on our body are very serious. The consequences of lead poisoning range from kidney damage to reproductive problems including declined fertility. Lead poisoning is especially worrisome in children, as it affects the development of their nervous system and causes permanent changes in behavior and in the ability to learn. In the last few decades, we generally have been well educated about the problem of lead in old paint and about what we needed to do to prevent children from being exposed. The issue of lead in the water, however, recently only became a public topic of conversation in the wake of the Flint lead crisis, wherein, in an ​egregious case of environmental injustice, an entire community was exposed to lead-tainted municipal water for far too long. It Is Also About the Water   Old lead pipes are not automatically a health threat. A layer of oxidized metal forms on the pipe surface over time, preventing water from directly contacting the raw lead. By controlling the pH of the water at the water treatment plant, municipalities can prevent corrosion of this oxidized layer, and even add certain chemicals to facilitate the formation of a protective coating (a form of scale). When the water chemistry is not properly adjusted, as the case was in Flint, lead is leached out of the pipes and can reach consumers’ homes at dangerous levels. Do you get your water from a well instead of a municipal water treatment plant? If you have lead in your house pipes, there is no guarantee that the water chemistry is not at risk of leaching lead and bringing it to your faucet. What Can You Do? If you have concerns about your pipes, run water from your tap to flush out your pipe before you drink it, especially in the morning. Water that has been sitting around for several hours in your house pipes is more likely to pick up lead.  Water filters can remove most lead from your drinking water. However, the filter has to be specifically designed for lead removal – check whether it is certified for that purpose by an independent organization (for example, by the NSF).  Ã‚  Hot water is also more likely to dissolve lead and carry it to your faucet. Do not use hot water directly from the faucet to cook or make hot drinks.  Have your water tested  for lead. ​While your municipality may have changed all of its delivery conduits to non-lead materials, the pipes inside your older home (or connecting to the municipal system under your front lawn) may not have been replaced. To confirm your water is safe to drink, contact a reputable, certified water testing lab and have them do an analysis. It is more costly, but its better to choose an independent company that will not try to sell you a treatment system.Your child’s blood level can also easily be tested for lead by a pediatrician. Detecting an elevated lead blood level early is important and would give you time to determine where it’s coming from.Children spend a lot of time in school – how’s the water there? Request water quality tests from your school district. If they do not have them done periodically, require they do so. Hunters are leaving lead out of their bullets, and ​​anglers are encouraged to choose alternatives. Getting lead also out of our homes and our drinking water will take more work, but it is important.
